Make Your Own Escape Room!
Here’s how to make an escape room for your family, with step by step clues and tricks!
1. Use post it notes as padlocks
Take a post it note and make three lines (per each digit) and leave a pen for someone to write in their guess.
Shove a suitcase in the corner of the room and post a padlock on it as well.
2. For the first clue, leave a word unscramble.
I took a boggle board and flipped all the dice to be consonants. Then I made a word from the only vowels left to spell “soap” you can spell something else though. If they need a hint, tell them to look at the vowels.
3. After the boggle board, hide a number on the back of the soap container, or whatever you spelled. This is athe first digit on the padlock to lead out of the room. Also on the back of the how fcontainer, leave a cryptic letter or note. Someone will think the note is the clue, but it is really what the underlined letters in your note spell. Have them spell suitcase, letting the people know that the second digit for the door’s padlock is inside the suitcase.
4. Leave three clues on top of the suitcase to help them unlock the three digit suitcase code. Have one lead to a bottle of toothpaste or lotion and hide a number inside the bottle. Sticky fun mess! For the second clue, draw a rough sketch of something in the room, and hide another number behind it. For the third clue, write a note saying “flip me” and hope they’ll turn on the fan using the light switch. Place a note with the third letter on top of the fan, which will tumble down when you turn it on.
5. For the third and final clue to help your people leave the room, leave one word: unusual in a word scramble or crossword page. Then, turn the time on the clock in the room forward three hours. Watch with delight as they frantically search for something unusual in the room, before realizing it is the time. So the number would be three, because of how far you’ve turned the clock ahead.
No way! This is timely- heading to an escape room right now!
