How to draw - the basics

Drawing is such a fun and malleable craft. You can doodle thank you cards, make your own comics, tear up you sketches into collages, or incorporate them in art journals.

You don’t need anything fancy to draw. Just some paper, a pencil, a pen, and some colored pencils or markers. I like to divide the drawing process into five steps: Sketch, ink, shade, color, and highlights. Here is the whole process for you in the form of quick tutorials.

We’re going to start with a simple dog face (mainly because I love dogs), but feel free to branch out and try different things after you’re comfortable with drawing.

Step One: Sketch

We’re going to start out with a simple pencil outline.

Step Two: Ink

Now we’ll use a pen or black marker and go over the shape we just made. Then we’ll let the ink dry and erase the pen lines.

Now we erase the pencil. . .

Step Three: Shade
Using a colored pencil, move your hand back and forth quickly to create the shading strokes.

Step Four: Coloring

Step Five: Highlights

This involves going over the lighter colored areas with a darker shade.

My biggest tip for highlighting is to think about where the light falls on your object. This gives your drawing some realistic detail.

Hope you had fun creating with me! Love you everybody!
