5 tips for editing your novel
Are you working on a novel? Congrats! You’ve done the hard work - writing it, but now there’s another big step ahead. Editing! Some people love it, some people hate it, and no matter where you stand on the editing spectrum, here’s how to make it much easier, and how to perfect your novel into the book of your dreams!
1. Your writing space
It’s important to organize your space so that it fits your own unique writing process. If you have trouble remembering the edits you want to make, have a notebook nearby, or paste some post it notes above your computer. If chaos inspires you, embrace the mess. If an organized space helps, tidy up! Make sure to have plenty of inspirational books and pens nearby!
2. Your mindset
Before you start editing, make sure your mind is ready! While you were writing your base draft, hopefully you weren’t to critical of your work. Now though, make sure to bring just a bit of that internal critic to your editing. Not too much though.
3. Designated time
Set designated times for your editing. I work best at night, because I stay up till 4 am reading anyway, so what’s a few more hours of sleep deprivation? Pick a time that will help you be the most productive you can be!
4. Seek help
If you feel too nervous to do it all alone, ask a friend! They’ll help you and be an impartial editor. It’s also nice to have someone read your novel, so you understand what will affect the readers of the world if your book gets published.
5. Just start!
And that’s the best advice I can give you. Just start.
