Special “Hourglass” Experiment

Who says science can’t be crafty? This experiment is super cool, and fun, and I think it will amaze you.

Today we’ll be making a sort of hourglass, but instead of measuring minutes and seconds it will measure the fossils of the earth.

Here are your ingredients:

1/2 cup Sand

1 cup Plaster of Paris

1/2 cup pebbles

3 colors of Tempra Paint Powder

Small Packet Beads of Choice

1 Water Bottle, Empty

Scissors

Varying Amounts of Water

Three Bowls

1 Spoon

In a bowl, mix the sand and half the amount of plaster of Paris.

In a separate bowl mix the pebbles and the remainder of the plaster of Paris.

Divide the sand mixture equally in the three bowls. Add one color of Tempra Paint Powder per each bowl.

Divide your beads into three types, either by color or by shape.

Put one type of beads per each bowl of sand mixture.

Cut the top off of your empty water bottle.

Pour one color of sand and beads in the bottom of the bottle.

Add half the rocks.

Add the second color of sand and beads.

Add the rest of the rocks.

Add the final color of sand and beads.

Fill the bottle with water.

By tomorrow the layers will have settled into sedimentary rocks with fossils (beads) in each. The bottom fossils will be the oldest, just like in a geological column.

Have a great day! God loves you and so do I!
